What Type of Carport is Right for You?

If you lack sufficient protection for your vehicle with Plant City’s hurricane season fast approaching, a carport could be the right choice for you.

There are a lot of things to consider when designing your structure: usage, location, building codes, size, and style. However, the most important choice you’ll make in the planning process is the material that you’ll use to build your unit because the materials will determine lifespan and long-term maintenance costs.

There are three metal options commonly used for carports: steel, tin, and aluminum.

Steel is the sturdiest option of the three metals, and it is actually one of the sturdiest options all around. With steep pillars and steel sheet roofs, structures made out of this metal are durable enough to withstand harsh Plant City hurricanes, and they’ll look stylish doing it. However, units built from this metal are often difficult and expensive to install compared with other options.

Tin and aluminum are less expensive, but they are also less durable and more prone to rusting, especially if constantly exposed to moisture or rain—something Florida sees quite a bit of. Unless you’re looking for a temporary—two to three year—fix, these options aren’t going to keep you protected long-term.

Wood Carport

Wood is the most durable material option for a carport built to withstand the inclement summer weather. These structures can also blend in with the style of our Plant City home and raise your property’s curb appeal. However, they can also be an expensive option long-term because of the treatments needed to protect the wood from UV rays and pests.

Synthetic Materials

Polyethylene and polyester carports are made of synthetic materials that are stretched over the supporting frames of the structure. The material is lightweight and inexpensive; however, units made from these synthetic materials are not likely to withstand high winds and heavy rain common in Florida, which make these another short-term option to provide cover from sun and rain for possibly a birthday party or family reunion.
